Energy Goals
McMaster, Hamilton, and the World
The United Nations identifies affordable and clean energy as a critical Sustainable Development Goal [1]. The city of Hamilton also identifies “Clean and Green” as a community priority and emphasizes the use of “clean energy to protect our air quality and reduce our contributions to global climate change” [2]. McMaster University aims to transition to net-zero carbon emissions by 2035 by following its “Net Zero Carbon Roadmap” and implementing strategies to save and produce energy [3]. I propose an additional source of renewable energy that both parties can harness for emission reduction: stationary bikes. Existing technology can be bolted onto bikes at McMaster and across Hamilton to supplement energy generation [4]. This project aims to raise awareness about the importance of green energy and encourage members of the Hamilton community, including McMaster University, to invest in renewable energy sources like stationary bike power generation.
